Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda For Sustainable Development

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were announced by the United Nations to meet the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This universal agenda calls for the end of poverty, protect our earth, and ensure that people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The new SDG Goals are adopted by 193 countries, whereas the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were intended for action in developing countries only. SDG feature more focus on means of implementation, the mobilization of financial resources, capacity-building and technology, as well as data and institutions.

These 17 SDG Goals with 169 associated targets are built on the successes of the MDGs, while embracing new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities, These goals and targets are integrated and indivisible, often the key to success for one goal involves addressing challenges of other goals. The goals are wide and interlinked, but each goal has many targets for all of us to work on. Only when we succeed in achieving on all the 169 targets can we consider achieving all 17 goals.

In Malaysia, The Economical Planning Unit (EPU) is the focal point for Sustainable Development (SD) and acta s a coordinating agency on the initiatives related to SD including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the process to embrace and implement the 17 SDG’s in a systematic and measurable manner, Malaysia has put in place an enabling environment through many strategic and innovative initiatives and programmes. The 17 SDG Goals are aligned to the 11th Malaysia Plan Strategic Thrusts:

The MTE 2021 Special Edition: SDG International Innovation Awards (SDGIIA) is the first in the region focusing on recognizing innovation, initiatives, programmes and ideas which contribute to sustainability, eradicating poverty, improving well being, protecting our planet, and building peace and prosperity.

Multi-stakeholder Partners And Collaborations For Success

Governments play a key role in achieving the SDG’s through setting and implementing policy frameworks, standards and regulations. SDG’s can only be achieved by with involvement of the public sector working alongside Governments, Parliaments, the UN system and other international institutions, local authorities, civil society, the scientific and academic community, businesses and citizens.

Colleges and universities are where leaders of the future are molded – the formation of global citizenship. They are also expected to contribute not only to their local communities, but also the global community. Many Universities design strategies to develop socially responsible competencies in students, who will be the agents of change in the future, instil their students with a well-rounded education and global awareness. The SDG’s framework models a System Approach for examining global and local challenges. It can help students to understand that success in addressing issues they are passionate about depends on success in addressing other issues, including on their own campus.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings assess universities against the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), using carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balance comparisons across three broad areas: research, outreach and stewardship.

Private organisations involvement is also gaining traction. For example, contributing to the climate action by investing in sustainable technologies, conducting due diligence process on its supply chain to uncover underpayment of employees, discrimination, child labour, and poor living conditions for workers. All these contribute towards a holistic approach to the companies’ societal impacts.

Participation Guidelines

All entries must comply with the following:

1. Entries must be submitted online through the awards online portal by 6 September – 23:59 (GMT +8). There will be no extensions granted under any circumstances.

2. Any innovations must correspond to the SDG Goals

3. Entries must be submitted into the relevant product category.

4. Entry fees must e paid at the time of submission using online banking transfer, local cheque

5. Awards entries submission and judges interview (if any) must be in English

6. Refunds will not be issued for applications withdrawn after submission

7. Products, including audio, video and/or live content, should be appropriate for a general audience. Explicit or simulated sex, virtual pornography, nudity and violence are prohibited. The organizer, PROTEMP Exhibitions and Conferences Sdn. Bhd in its sole discretion, may determine if a product is not eligible for consideration.

8. Each entry must be accompanied by a 200 word summary of words/ideas, AND one or more of the following evidences in the form of:

a. Photo (jpg format, max 2MB)

b. Powerpoint Slideshow – max 5 mins

c. Video (mp4), 720p, max 350 MB – max 5 mins

d. Physical innovation eg. book in pdf format

9. The content can be expressed in words, images, sound or a combination of any , to enable delivery of the critical messages to the judges.

10. All products write-up, photographs and video submitted can be used for the publicity in relation to the event Malaysia Technology Expo 2021 Sustainable Development Goals

11. The same entry may be submitted into multiple product categories and is eligible to win in each category entered provided the entry meets the requirement for the product category and a separate application fee is paid for each category submitted.

12. Entries must meet ALL the following requirements BEFORE they are qualified for judging:

- All required sections and fields of the online entry application forms are completed

- Applications are submitted successfully

- Entry fee are paid in full by 6th September 2021

14. Incomplete and unpaid entries will be disqualified. The Organiser, PROTEMP Exhibitions and Conferences Sdn .Bhd is not responsible for follow-up of incomplete entries

15. Judges decisions are final, no appeal will be entertained

16. Results will be published on 8th June 2021, 12.00 (GMT+8) on MTE’s Website. All participant will be notified the result by email before 17:30 (GMT+8)

17. All innovations will be published and promoted on MTE’s website and social media platforms

18. Medals and certificates will be shipped to all winners.

19. By participating in the award, each participant undertakes to guarantee the information and documentation submitted are correct and there is no product infringement on the intellectual property rights of others.
