OUR HISTORY

Lagos Advertising & Ideas Festival (LAIF) is the brain child of the Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN). The Awards came on stream in 2006. The maiden edition was held on Friday, June 9th, 2006 at the Expo Hall, Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos.

LAIF seeks to recognize creative excellence, help to improve the quality of creative craft and to promote the spirit of healthy competition, applying global best practices.

OBJECTIVES OF THE AWARD INCLUDE:

  • Reward and recognition of creativity.
  • Promotion of excellence in brand development strategies.
  • Launch of Nigeria’s creative potentials in international circles.
  • Creation of an avenue for the celebration of great ideas.
  • Recognition of marketing excellence.

HOW IT STARTED

The maiden edition of the Creative Awards was formally presented to the general public on Friday, April 21, 2006 at the Lagos Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Ikeja while the Creative Awards Seminar and Exhibition was held on Thursday, March 9, 2006 at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Ikeja, Lagos.

As a follow up to the first edition and in line with global practices, the Executive Board of the Association constituted a management board called LAIF Management Board (LMB) to take over the function of planning committee with a membership life span of three (3) years. This is to ensure stability in planning and coordination of the event as well as empower them to implement a long term plan for the success of the programme.

LAIF AWARDS SEMINAR

The seminar offers a unique learning experience as well as provides an in-depth insight into key marketing and marketing communications challenges. It is targeted at the senior executives of the advertising, media and marketing industry.

PRE-AWARDS PARTY

The Pre-Awards party is an item on the list of the LAIF Awards activities. It encourages the younger generation to participate in the celebration of great ideas as well as provide a platform for inter agency interaction.

YOUNG LAIFERS COMPETITION

This category is aimed at promoting excellence in brand strategy development as well as encourages craftsmanship in young practitioners. Participants of this category are young practitioners less than 30 years of age, working within a recognized advertising organization.

LAIF AWARDS DINNER

The LAIF Awards Dinner convenes captains of industry, business leaders and policy makers alike where Awards is given to winners who performed creditably well in the marketing communications industry.

GUIDELINES:

YOUNG LAIFERS COMPETITION

The “Young Laifers” Awards is aimed at promoting excellence in brand strategy development as well as encourage craftsmanship in young practitioners.

The culture of genuine creativity in its raw unadulterated form starts from solving problems with simple ideas before identifying how that solution will be executed with marketing and advertising techniques.

It is a competition that tasks young creatives paired up as Copywriters and Art Directors per team to solve real-life product and brand communication challenges with creative campaigns and ideas that can be executed.

Winners are awarded with prize money, gifts and scholarships.

This is aimed at young practitioners aged 30 years and under, working within a recognized advertising organization or in schools and colleges of advertising.

Participation Guidelines:

  • Participants should be 30 years or below by December 1, 2025.
  • Only practitioners working within AAAN member agencies are qualified to participate.
  • Participants must compete as a team of two participants comprising of a Copywriter and Art Director.
  • The team must have a Code name.
  • Details of costs for participating in Young LAIFers Competition is N30,000 for a pair of participants.
  • AAAN Member-agencies can send as many teams as possible.

The participation fee is NGNXX,XXX (XXXX thousand naira) per participant and each participant must complete their application by filling out the form on the website and successfully participation fee or before {date}, November 8th, 2025.

Participants will be briefed on the competition project on the day of the competition. They will be required to create communication materials for the project.

Participants are expected to come with their laptop and other creative hardware/software. Kindly come prepared for the event.

Winners will be announced at LAIF Awards Event.

2025 LAIF AWARDS Guidelines

How to Enter +
  • Participating organizations will decide which of the categories they want to enter for and fill the online form appropriately.
  • Details of the work should be clearly stated – such as:
    • Campaign Title
    • Media, Duration, and Credits (Creative Director, Copywriter, Art Director, etc.)
  • Upload any supporting documents that validate the entry.
  • Each entry must have a schedule, detailing when and where the AD, content or promotion was deployed.
  • Entry must include a summary of the Client's brief in not more than one hundred words.
  • A fee of {NXXXX/$XXX} will be charged for entry into regular categories.
  • All entries must have been run/exposed in media visible to Nigerian consumers.
  • Copyright ownership of the entry must rest in the Nigerian member-agency.
  • CAMPAIGN and LAIF EFFECTIVENESS CATEGORIES bear a different participation fee per entry.
  • Entries are only valid AFTER payment has been confirmed.
  • Each entry must be accompanied by evidence of deployment (e.g. certificate of transmission, tear sheets etc).
  • All entries must be submitted on or before the Entry Close Date.
  • Each entry must clearly state the media/medium and category being registered for.
  • All entries must have been run/exposed between June 2024 and July 2025.

  • Agencies must provide evidence to back up the claim.
  • Only work originated and created by a Nigerian member-agency qualifies to be entered.
WHO CAN ENTER FOR LAIF AWARDS +
  • You can enter any work that is created for the Nigerian and “Ghanaian” consumers.
  • The LAIF Awards is open to ALL and ONLY members of the AAAN.
  • Non-AAAN members are allowed to enter for just a few categories under different regulations.
  • The LAIF Awards is open to all areas of Brand Communication per category – including but not limited to Advertising, PR, Design, Architecture & Interior Design, Live Events & Activations, Sponsorships, Digital Media and Social Media – and any area where a brand interacts with consumers.
  • Anyone involved in the creation, publishing, or production of the work may submit an entry (including directly from the brand, agency, or production company).
  • All submissions must have a brand association.
  • In the case of multiple agencies working on a particular project/ campaign, all parties must agree on the agency to put in the entry and must have agreed on how the credits will be recognized. Any duplicated entry from another agency with same entry will be cancelled. No refunds will be granted on multiple entries.
  • All student work, created and submitted to a registered educational institution from the Eligible agency, may be entered. Unless permission is granted by the LAIF Awards in writing, student work should be submitted by the School/ College/ University, rather than directly by the individual student.
WHAT CAN BE ENTERED INTO THE LAIF AWARDS +

Entries that meet any one of the following 2 options will be accepted:

  • CREATED FOR THE NIGERIAN MARKET: Work that has been created specifically for and to run in Nigeria, irrespective of where the work originated or was produced. EXAMPLE 1: A German agency creates a campaign for a USA brand, specifically to flight in Africa. EXAMPLE 2: A South African agency creates a campaign to run in West Africa, for a global brand. NOTE: A Global campaign that happens to flight in the region is NOT eligible.
  • CREATED BY THE NIGERIAN MARKET: Work that has been created to run globally, or in any market in the world, as long as the work was conceptualized/originated by companies based in Africa or Globally.
JUDGING AND AWARDS +

For the LAIF Awards, the judging criteria focuses on key elements that reflect creativity across various categories. While the specific emphasis may vary slightly based on the category, the overall criteria are as follows:

  • 1. Idea (40%)
    Conceptualisation: The brilliance, strength and clarity of the central idea behind the work.
    Originality: The uniqueness and creativity of the concept.
    Resolution: How well the idea addresses a specific challenge or opportunity.
  • 2. Execution (20%)
    Craftsmanship: The quality of the finishing of the work.
    Articulation: Excellence in how the work conveys the message.
    Integration: How effectively the work is executed in its chosen medium.
  • 3. Impact (20%)
    Effectiveness: The results and impact on the brand, business, or social outcome.
    Engagement: The work’s ability to captivate and resonate with the target audience.
    Reach: The extent to which the work successfully connected with its intended audience.
  • 4. Relevance (10%)
    Brand Alignment: How well the idea fits with the brand’s message and objectives.
    Cultural Context: How the work taps into relevant cultural or market-specific insights.
  • 5. Inspiring (10%)
    Raise the bar: How well does the work raise the standards of the business, sector, society.
    Raise the game: How well does the work raise the standards of the creative practice and industry.

These criteria ensures that the LAIF Awards recognize creativity, however LAIF Awards will always rely on the judges keen discernment in judging work.

RANKINGS +

Credits will be used to calculate the Official Rankings – including Brand, Agency and Regional Agency Group of the Year. Individual rankings such as Executive Creative Director are also calculated using the credits you provide.

Brand, Agency and Agency Group of the Year will be announced at the awards during Creative Week.

For all other rankings, a period will be provided after the awards for entrants to check and amend credits before the Official Rankings are published. Once published, no more changes to the credits will be accepted.

ENTRY CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS +
  • All requests to withdraw an entry must be made in writing.
  • Requests made before the Entry Deadline may be replaced with another entry.
  • Entries cancelled after the Entry Deadline can not be replaced.
  • No Refunds on Entries: Under no circumstances will refunds of any fees or costs relating to Entries or entry into the Awards be issued to Entrants. The fees paid for Entries are intended to cover the costs of administration, processing, and judging the Entries and Awards.
  • Any Entries disqualified by LAIF will not be refunded. This includes duplicate entries and Entries that do not follow the specified rules.

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Entries are only submitted when payment is completed on the portal.
  • Entries open on the 30th of September, 2024 and closes on the 30th of October, 2025.
  • Late Entries open on the 1st of November, 2024 and closes on the 5th of November, 2025.

Normal Entry Window:

  • N65,000 per Entry,
  • N150,000 for Campaign Entries
