SHOW HOW YOUR INSTITUTION AND TEAMS ARE CHANGING SME BANKING

The Global SME Banking Innovation Awards are the world’s only awards programme dedicated exclusively to SME banking. They recognise institutions and teams improving how small and medium-sized businesses access finance, manage money and grow. Nominate an initiative that has made a meaningful difference to SME customers, your organisation or the wider banking ecosystem.

WHAT’S NEW IN 2027

The priorities shaping SME banking innovation
The 2025 and 2026 submissions show growing emphasis on the areas below. For each area, suggestions were made for 2027 awards to consider if that is the main focus of your initiative.

What Judges look for across all awards
About 76% of 2026 submissions described a measurable operational or customer result, up from about 56% in 2025. Whatever award you enter, explain what changed and show the result.

Also new or expanded for 2027: recognition for micro-enterprise products and services, SME financial health and management, banking resilience and emerging talent.

Judges accesses submissions against four equally weighted pillars: Innovation, Customer Experience, Financial and Business Performance and Strategy while considering the results presented alongside the market, customer and operating context of each initiative.

Talent and Leadership entries are assessed against Leadership Capability, Organisational Strength and Strategy. Where an initiative has a narrower scope than a category title suggests, the final award designation may be refined to reflect what the winning submission demonstrates.

ELIGIBILITY AND SUBMISSIONS RULES

The programme is open to conventional banks, digital and challenger banks, fintech companies, microfinance institutions and technology solution providers active in SME financial services. Service provider entries should be made with, or on behalf of, a specific SME bank and explain the results of that implementation.

Initiatives must meet the programme’s eligible completion or update period. [H2 2025-2026].

There is no limit on entries per institution. Submit a separate nomination for each award. Multiple entries from one institution in the same category may compete with one another.

PREPARING YOUR ENTRY

What an effective nomination shows
A strong entry makes the story of the initiative easy to follow: the SME need, the solution, what changed in practice and the outcome. Use a consistent period and explain the scope of every result.

Find the right category
Select the award that best describes the initiative’s primary purpose. A product, service or customer journey may involve several technologies, but the entry should make clear what is being recognised.

Category groups and who should consider them

  • SME Product Innovation: teams with a financial product that meets a specific SME need
  • SME Service Innovation: teams improving how SME customers are served, advised or supported
  • Digital Innovation: teams transforming a digital journey or customer experience
  • Technology: teams using technology to solve a defined SME banking challenge
  • Service Provider Excellence: providers entering with, or on behalf of, a specific SME bank, with results from putting their solution in place
  • Talent and Leadership: individuals and teams building leadership, skills, culture or staff-led innovation
  • Country, Regional and Global: institutions with a strong SME banking offering in a stated geography
